Slip Disc Causes, Symptoms, Treatment | Acupressure

Slip Disc or Slipped disc is a common term that we come across in this day and age of rush & haste. There are a lot of misconceptions about slip disc and it is important to understand slip disc before starting slip disc treatment.

The following should make one understand more about slip disc.

What is a disc?
The spine is made up of the vertebrae (the bones making up the spine), which have cartilage discs between them. The discs consist of a circle of connective tissue with a gel-like core at the centre. This gel-like core makes the spine flexible and at the same time acts as a protective buffer for it. In the centre of this column of vertebrae and discs is the spinal canal, which contains the spinal cord and it continues as a bundle of nerve fibres called the cauda equina stretching down towards the sacrum. Between each vertebra, the spinal cord has nerve root connections to different parts of the body.

The spine is divided into three diffrent parts:
1. Neck (cervical vertebrae)
2. chest (thoracic vertebrae)
3. the lower back (lumbar vertebrae).
4. The spine is connected to the ribs at the chest.

What is slipped disc?
When the soft part of the disc bulges through the circle of connective tissue, it results in slipped disc. This bulge may push on the spinal cord or on the nerve roots. Interestlingly around 25% of the population have slipped discs but do not show any noticeable symptoms.

Technically speaking a slipped disc is actually a bulged disc.

What are the reasons for a slipped disc?
There are many factors & reaons that increase the risk of slipped disc:
1. Harmful addictions like tobacco use.
2. Lack of regular exercise.
3. Inadequate & poor nutrition.
4. Age – As the body ages, natural biochemical changes occur. They result in discs gradually drying out consequently affecting disc strength and resiliency in the body.
5. Poor posture, incorrect body mechanics, hard physical labour puts stress on the spine.
All the wear and tear due to daily activities, age, body movements, stress cause a lot of stress and trauma on the spine.

Does a slipped disc occur at a particular age?
Generally, a slipped disc in the lower back is seen between the ages of 30 and 50 years. In the cervical vertebrae around the neck, slipped discs generally occur between the ages of 40 and 60 years.
More than often, a slipped disc occurs in the lumbar region of the spine notably at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels (L = Lumbar, S = Sacral).
The reason for this is that the lumbar spine carries most of the body’s weight. Persons from 30 to 50 years are more susceptible to a slipped disc because the elasticity and water content of the nucleus decreases with growing age.

Symptoms of a slipped disc?
Surprisingly, a slipped disc can be free of any symptoms. In case it causes pain, it is majorly due to the pressure on the nerve roots, the spinal cord or the cauda equina.

Can One prevent these injuries ?
One cannot stop time and aging is inevitable albeit lifestyle changes, proper posture, healthy food habits, regular exercise can help prevent the disc disease.
